SOMETHING IMPORTANT
WWW.SAVEASATO.ORG
The homeless animals in Puerto Rico need a voice. They need help. They need the proliferation of education of young children against cruelty to animals, for these children grow up to be the adults that abuse and throw these loving, defenseless beings into the streets to fend for themselves, discarding them like some inanimate, unfeeling object. They need the involvement of Government entities and legislation, the enactment and enforcement of animal-rights laws. They need protection.
The streets of our Island are inundated with these beautiful animals, who have turned ugly due to months -- sometimes years, oftentimes lifetimes -- of neglect, searching for food and water, walking aimlessly for miles beneath the hot sun or in the rain, yearning for shelter, desperate for love and affection. They may not speak with words, but just look into their sad, soulful eyes, for they speak volumes.
It breaks my heart to see this. My very own three satos were once among them, struggling just to stay alive. But I took them in, and they are the most loving, selfless animals you could wish for. All of those unfortunate four-legged nomads still out there, still wandering the streets, are exactly like mine, only displaced and abandoned, sad, hurt, lonely, frightened, starving, pitiful.
I could go on and on about this, but I think I have said enough. Please take a moment to click on the Save-A-Sato link and check out this wonderful, non-profit organization. Although I am not affiliated, I do try to donate whatever I can, whenever I can. I applaud all those who volunteer their services to this organization, giving of their time, their homes, their lives, to rescue, clean and cure these needful creatures, eventually finding good homes and creating happy endings.
SPECIAL ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
I also wish to express my gratitude to several of my co-workers in the Federal Court who have gone out of their way to rescue stranded animals from the streets, providing homes for them themselves, or spending fortunes on vet bills and boarding fees, until good homes are found:
Brenda Gonzalez, Hilda Gutierrez and Annie Flores, you are perfect examples of what ordinary people can do in extraordinary situations. There are a few less animals roaming the streets, now safe and happy, because of your courageous efforts.
Edilia Vazquez (Save-A-Sato Board member), thank you and your fellow Save-A-Sato members for doing what you have been doing all these years. You are the real champions. Your unselfish efforts have found loving homes for hundreds of our four-legged friends. Your work and dedication are admirable.
Patricia Garshak (Save-A-Sato volunteer), you are truly a hero. What you have done and continue to do for the animal community is unbelievable. Your compassion is overwhelming. You don t just stumble upon these poor animals, you actually go out hunting for them, capture them, and nurse them back to good health until they are placed with families of their own. Your passion for this sad cause has saved countless animal lives, and your efforts do not go unnoticed.
And, of course, my ex-co-worker and dear and longtime friend, Damaris Perez. For as long as I have known you, you have been a savior to animals in distress. More animals in need have passed through your threshold than that of Noah's Ark. You and Michael have opened your home to quite a menagerie throughout the years, and I admire you both for your continued generosity in that regard.
I am proud to be associated with all of you, both professionally and personally.
Please remember to spay and neuter your animals!
